Holistic ways to reduce anxiety.
Anxiety is the body's reaction to stress, danger, or unfamiliar environments.
It is a normal part of life that all individuals experience at some point. I have personally experienced anxiety on many occasions. Public speaking is one of my biggest fears. The thought of everyone looking at me and listening to my every word is terrifying. "What if I stumble on my words? What if someone asks me something and I don't know the answer?" Both of these things have come true, so how do I handle it?
The way I see it, I have two options. I can either let my fear of public speaking hold me back or I can learn coping skills to push through the anxiety. There have been times in my life when I have allowed fear to control me. I have even missed out on opportunities to speak about mental health topics because I was too afraid. Recently, I have pushed myself to do more public speaking, and although I become anxious each time, I continue to challenge myself.
So why do I push myself? It would be easier for me to just avoid public speaking, but then I might miss out on something God wants to use me for. If you are like me and struggle with anxiety at times, I encourage you to try these tips to help reduce your anxiety.
Tip #1 - Just Breathe
Close your eyes and take TEN deep breaths. Slowly breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. If you find yourself breathing too fast, continue to breathe until you notice your anxiety reducing.
Tip #2 - Focus
Focus on your happy place! For example, I love the beach, so I close my eyes and imagine myself near the water. I can feel the sand between my toes and the wind blowing softly against my face with the warmth of the sun on my back. The waves are crashing against the rocks, and they carry away all of my anxiety.
"You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment."
— Henry David Thoreau
Tip #3 - The Lord Is My STRENGTH
When we are weak, Jesus is STRONG! Memorize your favorite scripture and repeat it to yourself. The more we focus on HIM the smaller our worries seem. Talk to Jesus and let Him know your fears. Ask Him to reduce your anxiety and provide you with strength.
"I can do all this through him who gives me strength."
Philippians 4:13
I pray that you find these three tips helpful and that you will practice reducing your anxiety. Remember, anxiety is a normal part of life. We must learn healthy coping skills to practice utilizing them daily.
